From childhood, I adored the glamorous and feminine stars of the 1950s like Doris Day and Grace Kelly. I begged my mother to sew dresses with full, “twirly” skirts and loved wearing some of the beautiful hand-me-downs my grandmother had worn in the 1950s. My daughters are no different and love the dresses of this iconic time period. So when I created the Ladies’ 1958 Party Dress pattern, I knew my girls would want their own dresses to match!

Because I’ve had a lot of requests for patterns easy enough for beginners, I’ve kept this pattern as simple as the adult version and omitted the more dramatic adult “V” back. With its kimono-sleeve style, the difficulty of setting in sleeves is completely eliminated. The biggest challenge for a complete beginner will be sewing in the zipper, and I’ve included only the easiest zipper option in this child’s pattern.
