Who we are

Hi! I'm Jennie Chancey, and I've run Sense & Sensibility since 1996, launching my website (http://sensibility.com) in 1997, when the Internet was still new, and no one had even thought of algorithms,  data harvesting or privacy policies. The times have changed, but my commitment to privacy and NO SPAM has never changed. Due to an increased awareness and tighter laws on what data may be collected and kept by web-based businesses, I've put together this privacy policy to help you understand what data my site collects (it's only enough to process orders and never, ever to spam you or share your personal info with anyone else). Read on for all the necessary jargon, but just know at the outset that I don't use the information you submit for anything beyond processing your orders, and (if you opt in for it), sending out my sporadic eNewsletters!

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

My contact form asks for your first name and email address, which are only used for me to reply to you. I do not add your information to a mailing list or contact database unless you ask me to.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. YouTube videos). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Wordpress has built-in analytics so I can see how many people are visiting my site and where they come from, but I do not collect or share this data. It also helps me find outdated pages and correct their links.

Who we share your data with

The only other websites that "see" your data are my shopping cart at Cart66.com and Paypal.com (if you use PayPal at checkout). Those sites have their own privacy policies, which you can check on their websites. If you sign up for my eNewsletter, I add your name and email address to my list on MadMimi.com, but I do not sell my lists to other companies (no third-party advertising!).

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

We collect information about visitors who comment through the Akismet anti-spam service. The information we collect typically includes the commenter's IP address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL (along with other information directly provided by the commenter such as their name, username, email address, and the comment itself). This helps prevent bots from posting nonsense in the comments!

Your contact information

I do not harvest your contact information from your orders or comments to use for marketing purposes. If I make a change or correction to a pattern, I do go through past orders in the shopping cart and grab email addresses so that I can notify customers of these changes/updates. But I do not keep those email addresses in a general list.

Additional information

How we protect your data and what data breach procedures we have in place

This website is protected by a Sucuri firewall and a double SSL security certificate (one on the hosting side and one on the firewall side). The site is scanned daily for security breaches. We've never had a data breach in 20+ years and keep the firewall in place to guard against that. Sucuri is also GDPR-compliant.

What third parties we receive data from

None. We do not accept advertising or share data with third parties.
