Fashion Inspiration: My Paternal Grandparents
From my earliest memories, I have loved to play "dress up," and a large portion of my play wardrobe came from my paternal grandmother's cast-offs. I remember teetering around on silver high heels in a sparkly red chiffon dress liberally sprinkled with rhinestones. How I wish now that I'd known what I was wearing and saved it, but--alas!--that particular dress got worn to death and ended up in shreds long before I could appreciate its real value. Thankfully, my grandmother kept back a lot of her favorite clothes for me to enjoy as an older teenager, and I still have several beautiful pieces.
1940s "Hollywood" Pattern
This 1940s Hollywood pattern features a fitted midriff belt with back ties, a V-neckline created by the crossover bodice and softly gathered shoulder yokes. It was my chief inspiration for the 1940s Swing Dress Pattern!
1940s Leading Ladies
A trio of beautiful 1940s leading ladies, looking so glamorous. Gene Tierney looks smashing in her evening gown with cape and matching gloves; Veronica Lake (known for her trademark hairstyle) shows off a softly-draped evening gown; Myrna Loy looks cool and chic in her street dress with contrasting pockets and matching hat.
My Glamorous Grandparents (1940s)
Here are my glamorous grandparents, right in the middle of the "swing" era and all dressed up for a Hollywood party. My grandmother was a knock-out, wasn't she? Wish we could see her entire dress. She was known for her beautiful taste in fashion. The second photo shows my grandparents in 1947, shortly after my father was born.
1940s Pattern with Casual/Dressy Options
A wonderful 1940s pattern by Simplicity from the wartime years when fabric rationing was in effect. The dress on the right looks just right for an afternoon shopping. The one on the left has a more casual yet still "put-together" look.
1948 "New Look" Dress Pattern
It is easy to see the beginnings of New Look styling in this 1948 pattern by McCall's. The skirts are fuller, and the focus is on the nipped waist. This is especially noticeable on the dress with the diagonal stripes emphasizing the hourglass shape. This is such a simple pattern, but the results are WOW!
1940s Shirt Dress Pattern
1940s Shirt Dress pattern by Simplicity. The dress on the right would be appropriate to wear to an afternoon party or daytime wedding. The one on the left is suited for shopping or a town outing. Love that heart-shaped pocket!
1930s Leading Lady Film Stills
Here is a trio of wonderful 1930s leading ladies. The 1930s "look" is so distinctive--particularly in films.
