Comparison Chart for Simplicity's Versions of My Patterns

I am thrilled to have Simplicity license my original designs for the Regency Gown and Regency Underthings patterns. They offer authenticity and ease-of-use to more sewing and costume enthusiasts, and that is a wonderful thing. But you may well wonder if there are differences between the Simplicity patterns and my original versions and might wish to weigh your options before deciding which version to purchase. This page is here to help you navigate your choices!

The Regency Gown Pattern

S&S Version

  • Original historical notes and design notes included.
  • Illustrations for first steps included.
  • Overskirt step is included as an option; the pattern includes steps for a gown without an overskirt first.
  • Different long sleeve pattern piece with undersleeve option included.
  • No instructions for drawstring closure included.
  • Only one neckline treatment included (other necklines are offered in my Neckline supplement).
  • Appendix with instructions for making a Regency Era apron included.
  • Pattern created with minimal ease for a closer fit.
  • Cutting lines for A-D bust.
  • Pattern pieces printed on heavy-duty bond paper for durability.
Simplicity Version

  • Original historical notes and design notes omitted.
  • Illustrations for first steps (pinning side back and stitching) omitted.
  • Overskirt step is the only one shown for the ballgown.
  • More authentic long sleeve pattern piece without undersleeve option. (The sleeve is the one I've included in my new Elegant Lady's Closet pattern.)
  • Instructions for drawstring closure included.
  • Two different neckline treatments (essentially, the day gown uses my neckline supplement for a different look).
  • No apron instructions included.
  • Pattern sized up slightly with more ease (for original ease, cut the Simplicity version a size smaller than you measure on their chart).
  • All but the "A" cup cutting lines have been omitted, which means the bodice will be too short if you are a "B" cup or larger. To add the needed length, see the "DD" instructions HERE.
  • Pattern pieces printed on tissue paper.

The Regency Underthings Pattern

S&S Version

  • Original historical notes and design notes included.
  • Additional option for standing collar on chemisette included.
  • Original ease for a closer fit.
  • Pattern pieces printed on heavy-duty bond paper for durability.
Simplicity Version

  • Original historical notes and design notes omitted.
  • Additional chemisette option omitted.
  • Pattern sized up slightly for more ease (you can cut the Simplicity version a size smaller to attain the original ease).
  • Pattern pieces printed on tissue paper.

As you can see, there are pluses and minuses on both sides, so just pick that pattern that best meets your needs and go for it!
I do not sell the Simplicity versions here on my site, but you can get them from Simplicity.com or at
any of your local fabric and craft shops like Hancock's, JoAnn's, and Hobby Lobby. Thanks!
