Please click HERE for details.

Official Rules:

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. THE CONTEST IS OPEN ONLY TO LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES*, AGES 12-22**. Participation constitutes entrant's full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules. The contest ("Contest") will be held from January 1, 2007 to December 1, 2008 and is sponsored and administered by Sense and Sensibility Patterns at P.O. Box 397, Chelsea, Alabama 35043, operators of sensibility.com.

Eligibility
The Contest is offered only to legal residents of the United States*, ages 12-22**, with a valid mailing address. Employees, independent contractors, officers, and directors of Sense and Sensibility, their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors, and their immediate family members and persons living in the same household of such persons, are not eligible to participate in the Contest. The Contest is void where prohibited by law.

Notes:
* We hate to exclude anyone, but the U.S. residency requirement is due to legal restrictions.
** Because there are restrictions on minors (those under age 18) entering contests, if you are under 18 you must have a parent or guardian sign your entry in order to be eligible. If you will turn 23 during the time the contest is open, you can still participate as long as you submit your entry prior to your birthday and include proof of date of birth. Thanks!

How to Enter
You may enter the Contest by sending your completed entry by mail to Pattern Contest, P.O. Box 397, Chelsea, AL 35043 by December 1, 2008. Incomplete or illegible entries are not eligible. All entries become the property of Sense and Sensibility and will not be returned unless the entrant provides a self-addressed, stamped envelope for this purpose. Entry is only good for this contest and will not be eligible in subsequent contests. Sense & Sensibility is not responsible for late, lost, or misdirected mail.

What Constitutes a "Completed Entry?"

All entrants must submit the following items in order to qualify for the contest:

  1. One photocopy of your original design sketch based upon a historical fashion with your name and address (and e-mail address if applicable) clearly printed on the reverse.
  2. One essay (500-1,000 words) documenting the historical research done for the pattern and/or otherwise demonstrating how the design was inspired by an original historical fashion and/or fashions. Essay should be printed double-spaced and stapled so the sheets remain together. Your name and address (and e-mail address, if applicable) must be printed at the top of each page. If you have it, please attach a photocopy or printout of the original inspiration at the end of your essay. [Note: If your inspiration comes from a copyrighted source (pretty much any books or patterns after 1934), please just send a complete reference of the source rather than photocopying it, which is against the law. Thanks!]
  3. One essay (500-1,000 words) explaining why you believe your pattern is marketable today and would appeal to an audience interested in re-creating old-fashioned clothing for girls or women. Essay should be printed double-spaced and stapled so the sheets remain together. Your name and address (and e-mail address, if applicable) must be printed at the top of each page.
  4. One full-sized pattern drawn either on pattern paper or on interfacing with each piece clearly marked and with your name and address (and e-mail address, if applicable) printed upon each piece. The pattern must be sized according to Standard American Pattern Measurements for women or girls and be made to accommodate only one size on either chart.
  5. Clearly typed instructions for assembling your pattern (illustrations are recommended and helpful, but they are not required).
  6. Full-length 5 x 7" photographs (one front and one back) of one completed outfit made from your pattern (either on a live model or a mannequin). Photos need to be clear and crisp so that the judges can see the details of your design.
  7. $10 entry fee, payable by check or money order to Sense and Sensibility.

Place all of these items into a large envelope (taking care that you do not fold your essays or your design sketch) and mail them via first class mail to the address given above. Incomplete entries will not be considered (or returned unless a SASE with correct postage is provided).

Winners
All entries will be judged by an independent panel of professionals in the costume and pattern design field. Three finalists will be selected by the panel prior to March 1, 2009, from all eligible entries (barring any unforeseen delays). Finalists will be posted on the Sense and Sensibility website for a vote, and the public will select the winning design. Decisions of the juding panel are final and binding. Odds of winning depend on the total number of eligible entries received. Winners will be notified by e-mail or postal mail within 5 days of the close of voting. Sense and Sensibility is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected, or unsuccessful efforts to notify winners. If a prize or prize notification is returned as undeliverable or if any winner fails to claim a prize, such prize may be forfeited, and the second-place winner will be given the first prize. Where permitted by law, the winner agrees to grant to Sense and Sensibility the right to print, publish, broadcast and use at any time the winner’s name, picture or other likeness, voice and biographical information as news or information for advertising and promotional purposes without additional consideration in any media now known or hereafter developed throughout the world. Failure to grant such rights may result in disqualification with an alternate winner or potential winner selected. Accepting and/or using prizes constitutes permission (except where prohibited by law) to use winner's name, hometown and/or likeness for promotional purposes without further compensation. Other restrictions, conditions and limitations may apply.

Entries will be rated on these four criteria:

  1. The quality and accuracy of the historical research presented (including good use of grammar, spelling and punctuation);
  2. The talent of the "translation" from a historical original to a modern pattern with old-fashioned appeal;
  3. The quality of the pattern design itself, the accuracy of its sizing and its overall construction;
  4. The clarity of the pattern instructions/illustrations provided by the designer.

Prizes
First-place winner will receive a cash prize of $150, a copy of the original pattern cover artwork signed by Anna Lankford (when completed) and ten copies of the final published pattern when it is available. Second- and third-place winners will receive honorable mention on the Sense and Sensibility website and a frameable certificate of merit. No alternative prize, cash equivalent, or other substitution is permitted. The Prize is non-transferable. All federal, state and/or local taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner.

General Terms and Conditions
By participating, entrants agree that Sense and Sensibility, its agents and representatives, affiliates, advertising and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors are not responsible or liable for, and shall be released and held harmless any and all losses, damages, rights, claims and actions of any kind in connection with or resulting from: (a) any condition caused by events beyond the control of Sense and Sensibility that may cause the Contest to be disrupted or corrupted; (b) any participation in the Contest or any acceptance, possession, or use of any prize, including without limitation, personal injury, death, and property damage, and claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy; or (c) lost, late or misdirected prize notifications or prizes. Sense and Sensibility reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any person tampering with the entry process, plagiarizing copyrighted designs or otherwise in violation of these rules.

Copyrights
You must be the original designer and have full ownership of all sketches, writings, patterns or other elements submitted as part of your entry. Any entries that are found to be in violation of a third party's copyright will be immediately disqualified. If the violation is discovered after the distribution of prizes, any prizes awarded to the designer of said entry will be returned to Sense and Sensibility at the designer's expense. Designer will also lose the ability to participate in future contests from Sense and Sensibility. You grant Sense and Sensibility unrestricted rights to use, modify, and market the winning pattern design in any way and forfeit all ownership of copyright or remuneration from future sales of the published pattern. Pattern designers will be welcome to purchase additional copies of their winning pattern at cost (after the first ten, which are free). They are also free to offer patterns purchased at cost on their own websites or sell them in any other manner as long as the design is not altered or the original artwork changed in any way.
