Hello everyone, I’m Marva.  I have been sewing historical costumes for many years, but have lately focused on Regency clothing since taking up English country dancing and joining the local chapter of the Jane Austen Society.  I just ordered the chemise and stays pattern, and am looking forward to adding some historical undergarments to my wardrobe.  I also love reading, gardening, and hiking.

I’m pleased to make your acquaintance as well!  How lovely to live in Ireland.  I have always wanted to visit.  I have a young friend here in Oregon who plays Irish folk harp, and has been to Ireland a few times to study and compete.  She was the 2010 All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil senior harp championship.  She says the people are really nicesmile.

Welcome!

Hi Geneece!  Thank you!  Love your website.  You have many beautiful gowns.  Do know of any good places to research Regency period fabrics/prints?  I have just been buying what I like at the local fabric store, and looking at film adaptations for ideas, but I would like to learn more about historically accurate fabrics.smile

Welcome Marva! I only started costuming about 3 years ago aand I have learned such a lot. This forum introduced me to Pinterest and there is so much to see there, you soon begin to get a feel for what works for the period. By the way, the shift and short stays go together really easily, even though they look complicated. I know I was intimidated, but even my first try turned out very well.

Good luck!

Frances

Fashion plates from the era, and extent gowns in museums!  Pinterest will have a lot of both.

I’m thinking we had a list here, of the best museums.  I’ll try to find the post this afternoon.

I never thought to look on pintrest for historical fashions, what a great idea. I think I also need to learn more about this Jane Austen society. What is it? What do you do? How do you join?

Fashion plates are drawn paintings done for ladies magazines and books of the time.  The first began to appear in the early 1700s.  Hope this helps!

We get together every other month to discuss some aspect of JA books, such as travel or birth order of characters and to drink tea and eat amazing treats.  Sometimes we have guest speakers or a dance, sometimes costume events but not always.  Check the national JASNA website for a chapter in your area.smile
