so, here I am all new and shiny! I’m excited to join this sewing group because I love all things creative, but creative things you can wear best of all. I’m very new to sewing and I’m slowly learning. I hope to be able to master some of the dresses on this website (I’ve been salivating over the 1950’s party dress *sigh* some day). Any helpful tips and encouraging words would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome! So glad you’re here! Having made (so far) six dresses from the 1958 Party Dress pattern you referred to, my advice would be to go for it! There’s no better way to learn than just jumping in and doing something. The instructions are very thorough and clear, and it’s quite simple to construct with just easy darts in the front and back and a totally straightforward skirt.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Do you have children you can sew for? (either your own or someone else’s) I find sewing for children is a bit quicker, and they’re not going to see any mistakes you might have made! Generally, you’re looking for a smallish number of pieces and mostly straight seams. Also, you probably want something that doesn’t take too much fabric, just in case!
