so, here I am all new and shiny! I’m excited to join this sewing group because I love all things creative, but creative things you can wear best of all. I’m very new to sewing and I’m slowly learning. I hope to be able to master some of the dresses on this website (I’ve been salivating over the 1950′s party dress *sigh* some day). Any helpful tips and encouraging words would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your patience! Sorry it took me a while to approve your posts. Haven’t had a moment to get on the forum lately. Welcome to our little community!

Welcome!  So glad you’re here!  Having made (so far) six dresses from the 1958 Party Dress pattern you referred to, my advice would be to go for it!  There’s no better way to learn than just jumping in and doing something. :)   The instructions are very thorough and clear, and it’s quite simple to construct with just easy darts in the front and back and a totally straightforward skirt.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Happy sewing,

Welcome!  I’m a new sewer too, and I second the advice to just jump right in – you can always ask questions here if you get stuck.

It’s so great to see other new sewers on here – I was afraid I would be the only one! I’ve been eyeing that pattern as well. I’ve always loved that silhouette. It’s so flattering on so many people!

Thanks everyone! So to get started with the basics do any of you more experienced sewers have suggestions on easy patterns I could practice on? Either from this site or from other sources?

Do you have children you can sew for? (either your own or someone else’s) I find sewing for children is a bit quicker, and they’re not going to see any mistakes you might have made! Generally, you’re looking for a smallish number of pieces and mostly straight seams. Also, you probably want something that doesn’t take too much fabric, just in case!

Colette Patterns has several easy vintage-inspired patterns.  I found the instructions to be very clear and the website has great picture tutorials (linked on the sidebar) for specific skills.
