Please let me know if your experience is improved with this new update. The tech guys took everything I told them about (bugs with timezone issues, folks showing up as visible when logged in invisibly, problems with IE browser, etc.) and worked out fixes for all. But if you find new bugs (or if old ones are still a problem), please post here so I can report those bugs.

Thank you!

Warmly,

Jennie

Jennie, I’ve still got issues with Internet Explorer.  I tried to log on this morning with it and I gave up after a blank page sat there for 3 minutes.  I logged out and tried again.  Same thing.  I hate to be the constant bearer of bad news but they don’t have it worked out yet from my end.  There’s nothing wrong with my computer.  I use IE as my primary browser and I don’t have these issues at other websites.

Jennie,

I just tried logging on through IE, not version 8.  I still have the exact same problems I did before the updates.

-Main site page does not load correctly.  Much wider.  I can’t access the message forum through the pull down from menu because of the large pictures interfering with the pull down menu.

-I copied and pasted the link to the message forum, in the browser, but it’s just ‘hanging’ I can’t get through to log in.

Hope that helps….

Carol

OK, the IE finally loaded, but it took a very, very long time.  When I went to ‘log in’ it kept bumping me out and not allowing me to finish the process.  At present, after persisting, I have now done the ‘log in’ thing, but the page is not loading, it’s hanging and hanging, and hanging… at present, it’s still hanging, it’s been several minutes.  I will see if I can actually get through.

I have successfully logged on, but it’s taking forever!  I am trying to load a couple of threads to see if I can access pictures and such, but now I can’t even switch back to the tab…it won’t let me access it, probably because it’s taking so long to load.  All other browser tabs are working fine, but trying to access the IE tabs with the S&S message forum will not operate correctly.

When I hold the courser over the tab at the bottom of my computer, I can see the page has loaded, or mostly loaded, but I can’t pull it up.  OK, it just pulled up, BUT it’s not loaded well at all….I’ll see if I can wait long enough and attempt to post using IE.

I have a forum open, now, but it took over 8 minutes to get to it.  Now I will see if I can pull up pictures in a thread…..might take too long, though! :P  I’ll see if I can wait it out….I might lose internet while waiting, we are having our roof replaced! ;)  But, first, they are shoveling all the snow off the roof…poor guys!

OK, I am at 10 minutes  + and the thread still has not loaded for me.  I am attempting to load Sarah’s thread with the Baby Hobbit pictures. :)

I’m having no trouble at all with IE8. I can get into all the topics, and see all the pictures. I can’t enlarge Sarah’s Hobbit pix, but I don’t see that as a problem as I can go to her blog.

It took over a 1/2 hour to load, Jennie!  I clicked on the photos and they only gave a blank box with the x in it.

I was attempting to leave a reply in one of the threads, this one here, but I couldn’t leave a message.  I am going to shut down that window with IE as it appears to be messing up my computer! :P

Carol

ps  Just closed the window down for IE and now my computer is behaving properly, again. :)

Suzi

That’s good to know, Suzi!  Perhaps the ‘fixes’ that were made are not for the masses at this time and only the new version.  Not everyone will be updating to IE8, I suspect, so I will just not use IE! :)

Suzi, are you accessing the forum through the main page and then the menu?  Or, are you accessing it through a bookmark?

IE8 works great for me–Suzi and I must be somehow connected (LOL) because my issues are pretty much the same as hers.  I’m sticking with what’s working for nowsmile–interesting how it’s different for so many people!

That’s good to know you are having a good experience with IE8 too, Krista! :)

Jennie, perhaps we should know, are you wanting to know the ‘bugs’ for the forum only, or do you want to know about the main page and site as well?

I don’t know if you are having software updates for both portions of your site, or just the forum.

With IE, not “8”, the main page does not load well for me, and I cannot access all parts of the site, due to this issue.  I can access the forums, but with great difficulty and not something I would invest time in doing, too costly time wise. ;)

Carol, I’m sorry, but I don’t know what you mean by a bookmark. I have the site on my “Favourites”, and use that to access the main page each time. I then choose the bit I want to access. I had problems before I upgraded to IE8. but not now. I don’t have any other system, like Firefox etc.

Sorry, Suzi, ‘bookmarks’ are the same as ‘favourites’.  I have forgotten, since I don’t use IE very much these days.  If you ‘favourite’ or ‘bookmark’ the message forum, you can go directly into the forum, rather than through the main site page.  I didn’t realize you could do that, with the old forum, until we were having issues with the board running slowly over there.  Then I discovered I could go ‘through the back door’ to the forum, by way of my history, to the forums, directly.  Anyway, I was wondering if it makes a difference, in how one gets to the forum, because I am unaware of how the main site. vs. the forums are set up.  Thought we should just let Jennie know that, in the event one way is operational and the other, plagued with difficulty. :)

TIME STAMP FOR PROFILES

Hi Jennie,

Sorry, there is not a ‘title’ space for putting in new thoughts or ideas to an already existing thread, so I put the words in bold to hopefully catch your attention. ;)

Regarding the time stamp on profiles, it is showing up as the member’s time zone, not my own.

Being able to see when a poster was last on, can be confusing when it’s keeping time in their time zone, but you are viewing the board in your own time zone. :P

Time stamping on receipt of messages in the private message section now works well.

I’m using IE 9.  As Carol said, it’s extremely time consuming to try to access any part of the site with Explorer. It would certainly deter me if I were just “passing through”.

The only way I can post is through Firefox, which isn’t my first choice for browsers.  Carol has mentioned Chrome, but I haven’t had the time to figure that out yet.

Given that an enormous number of people use PC’s that already have IE loaded onto them and that a huge number of those people are not interested in learning the more “Geeky” aspects of computer use, it’s super important for a website to be able to work with IE.

Carol, I’ve got both the main site and the forum bookmarked.  I have tried to enter both ways with the same results.

Thanks for the feedback, ladies! Let me straighten some things out:

1. This forum software was designed as a plugin for my site’s software platform (Wordpress), so it’s fully integrated. Unlike the old forum, there aren’t two different systems running here, so if you have problems with the entire site in IE, I need to know that, as the issues might have nothing to do with the forum plugin but with the software platform on the whole.

2. The time-stamping feature has not been changed. The software stamps each post with the poster’s timezone (which they set in their profile). If a timezone hasn’t been chosen, the software just gives it a plus or minus GMT (UTC). Having the software reinterpret that timestamp for each person logging (and re-stamp it to reflect your own timezone) in is fairly complicated on the programming end of things, but I will ask the tech guys if it’s something they can do in a future update. Don’t hold your breath, though! I seriously doubt that’s going to be considered a high-priority item, as it’s not a bug but a preference.

3. I’ve had a lot of IE techies testing my site, and it runs perfectly for almost all of them with IE7 and later. All of them are scratching their heads over the problems with IE9, as no one has been able to replicate any of these problems on their end. I’ve sent them screen shots and explained what is going on, and they still can’t get IE9 to behave that way when tested. So the tech guys have asked me to find out what (if any) other plugins/addons/programs IE folks might be running at the same time (including Internet filters). It is quite possible that the problems aren’t really IE at all but something like an Internet filter or “cookie eater.” If your filter is set to chomp up cookies (which help the forum to “remember” you at login so you don’t get bumped off), then you will definitely have problems loading the forum. If you don’t mind giving me a list of Internet programs/plugins you are using with IE, that would be very helpful for my tech guys.

Hope this helps! We’ll get this figured out, but it’s tricky for tech support guys to work on a problem when they cannot reproduce it on their end. I’ve also got a program on my Mac that lets me see how Internet Explorer views my site, and it’s running fine in that. Truly puzzling!

Thanks!

Jennie

Thanks for the helpful information, Jennie!

Well, I have problems with the main site.  I cannot access this message board, going through the main site.  I cannot drop down the menu bar past the first item, because the front pictures are so distorted.  I can access the message forum, by history or copy paste into the browser.

I decided to figure out what version of IE I am using, it is IE 8!  When I came to the site again, in IE, my machine gave me the ‘blue screen of death’ and then shut down everything on my computer. :(

Using IE to go to other sites is not a problem, just with S&S.  When I come to S&S, it runs incredibly sloooooowwwww!  It’s as if there is a bug of some kind, but I can’t figure it out.

The site on IE 8, recognizes me when I come back, by name.  Sometimes by name a (guest), other times, it has me sign in, but knows my name.

Jennie, I do not have this problem with any other site I go to, using IE 8.  I wish I could be of more help, but it’s only IE I am having this difficulty with, and your site.  Somethings not right, but I don’t know what it is.

Maybe we aren’t allowed to cross the border?! :P  Just kidding of course. ;)  I hope it gets fixed.

Regarding the time stamp, when they upgraded the software, it fixed the time stamp on private messages.  I was guessing perhaps it was an easy fix since they did that…..I never really understand all the programming and software technicalities. embarassed

Dawn, I am only able to get as far as I can because of the ‘techies’ in my house.  Without them, I would only be using IE, which came with my laptop.

Okay, so the “era” pictures on the front page are interfering with the drop-down menu function? THAT is a bigger software issue that has nothing to do with the board. I had this problem when I first put slideshow galleries back into posts, so let me see if the tech guy can figure out why this is happening with the front page images.

Are you running any filtration software? Sounds like your cookies are working fine, but your filter could be “eating” other bits and pieces of code….

Thanks!

Oh, and one more thing the tech guy will need to know: Did this menu problem just start happening with the most recent software update, or has it been an issue from the start?

Thanks,

Jennie
