With this pattern, you can create a wide variety of dresses for day and evening–plus a jumper that can be worn over a blouse made from my Romantic Blouse pattern. This pattern was inspired by the PBS production of “Wives and Daughters,” which motivated me to look into extant gowns from this transitional time between the Regency and Victorian eras. The photos on this page show several different outfits you can make from this pattern (you could easily make a dozen different styles by mixing and matching necklines, sleeves, and bodice treatments). The pattern is rated “intermediate” because of the fitting techniques involved, but a patient beginner should be able to navigate the instructions without too much trouble.

My Romantic Blouse pattern is meant to go with the jumper you can make from the Romantic Era Dress pattern, but it is also versatile enough to use for other eras. The blouse is definitely an “inspired by” creation and not meant to be period authentic. Made in heirloom fabrics with long sleeves and lace trimming, it works beautifully with the 1830s jumper. Made in a sturdier shirting material with short sleeves, it looks very retro-1949! You can also trim it with wide lace at the collar and cuffs and tuck the shirt into the “Beatrix” Skirt for a very “Armistice Day” look. This is a fun pattern to use to create a wide variety of styles.

Cuff length is adjustable and an optional woven tie allows you to customize to fit your wrist. Or just let the lacy wrist flare out loosely for a Romantic look. Fit to wear to a costume ball, it’s also light and warm and practical, easy to wrap around your arms or shoulders when the evening grows chill. It’s crocheted in short rows with the fleur-de-lis staggered in rows separated by an easy chain mesh and no separate edging except at each end. Here’s the companion to the women’s Romantic Era Dress pattern. I’ve pulled sleeves and skirt width from the later Romantic period, but the fit is still very similar to the Ladies’ Romantic Era Dress. Early Romantic Girls’ fashions looked just like Regency fashions, so pulling those larger sleeves and wider skirts gives this a different look–and it will take you into the early Victorian Era if you simply lengthen the bodice by two inches! Dresses made from this pattern are meant for play, and I highly recommend getting the Pinafore/Pantaloon pattern so you can also create the requisite pantaloons.
